MY TALE
Was there a particular event or experience that was a turning point in your life and somehow changed your view of the nature of reality?
There were many experiences, one leading to the next and the next. My life has unfolded with a sense of surprise and innate order. Mine was a gradual process of opening, with many strands of insights weaving together into a big braid. Everything expanded me yet I was initially unaware of the spiritual insights. When I think back on it now there seemed to be a strong underlying purposefulness to the focus of my interests and attention. I began drawing and writing poetry quite early, and I think this opened my right brain and helped me develop intuition and the art of paying attention.
Once, when I was in art school, one of my professors showed us how to draw negative spaces, so instead of sketching the leaves on the trees you draw the spaces between the leaves. I had never looked at the world like that, and it opened me to a new kind of perception. I was always curious about the mysteries and perception, and was a voracious reader of everything from psychic discoveries behind the Iron Curtain, to Fritz Perls and transpersonal psychology, to Alan Watts and the people exploring altered states of consciousness.
I didn't feel like religion alone was the path for me—it was too codified. I wanted a direct, more mystical experience of the higher reality so I could decide about spirituality for myself. Why did people go to war over the way they perceived the Divine? Didn’t anyone want to find the common elements at the core of all religion — before it became too distorted by greedy or controlling priesthoods? So I ended up amalgamating many kinds of teachings: religious, shamanic, scientific, cross-cultural, and even the ancient mysteries from Egypt and the Essenes. I made a big stew.
Then I studied clairvoyance development, learning to meditate and work with visualization. Doing the exercises, getting symbols, and doing readings for people, then discovering that what I saw was accurate, was a phenomenal experience! I saw that I was good at it. At the same time, I began to interpret my dreams; I hadn't realized I was having fairly sophisticated precognitive and teaching dreams until my teacher called it to my attention. I had many visionary dreams in my twenties that were to guide me in the coming years, which fueled my love of seeing through the surface to find inner, deeper realities. So the clairvoyance training really changed me — I realized I didn't have to work in a corporation (I was an art director and graphic designer at the time), that I could make a living doing this sort of work.
I had a constant sense that there was just so much more to learn. There were so many mysteries that all fit together, if I could just see the overall puzzle. Studying metaphysics helped me dive into the big picture. I could look into the inner world to see what was causing the outer world. That principle made sense to me, and that's what has kept me fascinated. Look at the outside circumstances of a person's life and see what caused them; look at a mental illness and see what caused that; look at the way an event occurred and the forces underlying that.
A FEW INSIGHTS
What insights did you have as a result and how did that affect what you do now?
It showed me that the nature of reality is such that there is a nonphysical, inner world that's very, very real. It is the world of energy, consciousness, and imagination—the imaginal realm—where everything exists and there is no limitation. That fuels the physical world, and we can have as much as we want if we can get rid of the clutter in the way—all the limitations, the negative thinking and fear that says we can't do and have what gives us joy. That became a primary way of thinking for me so I set out to clear my own fear and identify the ideas I had taken on from others that weren't mine. And really, it took many, many years of clearing myself. I was very disciplined and probably not too easy to live with back then! And, of course, it’s an ongoing endeavor; perhaps once you clear most of your own blockage, you begin to clear the fear in the field around you. Because it’s all “you,” right?
In the early years as I was opening, there was a lot of political unrest, free-thinking, and opening into idealism. The more I thought about idealism, the more I sensed it was just the memory of the purity of spirit. I was always idealistic and wouldn't settle for just anything. When I would compare an ordinary job with doing something I felt was real and truthful for me, I couldn't compromise. I zigzagged forward, moving from one thing to another, trying to get closer and closer to something that felt like the core of being—the most real thing. That got me deeper into the underlying principles of life—the universal laws governing how life works, how consciousness works. I really wanted to live from those truths. A big part of the insight I gained was that I can totally trust the way the Flow unfolds; a higher wisdom coming from the collective soul level is helping me—and helping you—do the exact next thing that needs to happen
MY MESSAGE
What message would you like to leave with the reader?
I'm very positive about the transformation process we’re all experiencing, and I do think that's what's underway today. I think we’re shifting out of an old way of perceiving the world. It’s an old, linear perception has created the fear-based world we know and the way it functions. We’re now entering a new kind of perception—it’s spherical and holographic—basically a vast, expanded present moment that includes everything and everyone. We will soon know a very different reality, and it’s going to be fantastic! It's this new perception that I've been writing and talking about (see my books Leap of Perception and Transparency), and I think entering it fully is absolutely doable in our lifetime. We just need to learn the steps and stages in the process, and be committed to choosing how we really want to feel, to living in the soul-in-the-body state, or what I’ve called our “home frequency.” We mustn't allow negative thinking to dissuade us. I think our transformation and the world’s transformation will unfold easily when we do these few basic things.
Also, I want to say that it's fine to be a little bit selfish. Don't give up on what you want to do and what you feel is right just because someone else doesn't like it or you think you're supposed to fit in with society. Just keep on being selfish (but not egotistical) and go for what feels right. I did that and didn't fit in with other people for much of my life, but it was probably the only way I could have gotten to my life’s work. And now I feel connected to everyone! Growing up in the Midwest, none of this existed—the idea of becoming a professional intuitive was laughable or too outrageous to even imagine. But I was guided, by my own instinct coming from some higher level of Self, to stubbornly follow the breadcrumb trail toward something I didn't know could exist. It was a matter of gauging the difference between what felt “just right” and either not quite right or just plain wrong. Anyone can do it: just pay attention!
